What Is a Diamond Certificate?

A diamond certificate provides important information about a diamond that we cannot always recognize with the naked eye. When choosing a precious stone, we are usually first attracted by its beauty, while a diamond certificate reveals its precisely determined and independently verified characteristics.

A certificate is a document issued by a gemological laboratory after examining an individual stone. It contains information that helps us better understand what we are actually holding in our hands.

A certificate does not give a stone its beauty. It does, however, provide us with information about its identity.

What Can We Learn from a Certificate?

For diamonds, some of the most important details are the so-called 4Cs - carat, colour, clarity and cut

A certificate can also include the stone’s exact dimensions, its shape, proportions, quality of polish and symmetry, fluorescence, as well as other characteristics that cannot necessarily be determined by observing a diamond with the naked eye.

In some certified diamonds, the report number is also laser-inscribed on the girdle (the narrow edge or circumference of a diamond that separates its upper and lower parts). With appropriate magnification, this allows us to verify the connection between the specific diamond and its certificate.

A Certified Diamond Is Not Necessarily Better

This is something we consider particularly important when choosing gemstones.

A diamond certificate is a document describing the stone’s characteristics, not a guarantee that the particular stone will captivate us the most.

Two diamonds with similar information on paper can look quite different in person. Their appearance is influenced by their proportions, cut, inclusions, and, above all, by the way light is reflected within the stone and returned to the eye.

That is why, when choosing gemstones, we do not look only at the numbers. We look at the stone as a whole – how it looks, how it responds to light and, ultimately, what feeling it creates.

Who Issues Certificates?

Certificates, or gemological reports, are issued by specialized laboratories.

Among the internationally best-known laboratories for diamonds are GIA (Gemological Institute of America), IGI (International Gemological Institute), and HRD Antwerp.

When purchasing a stone, it is therefore important not only that the stone has a certificate, but also who examined the stone and issued the report.

Different laboratories use their own procedures and grading standards.

What About Certificates for Other Gemstones?

With sapphires, rubies, emeralds, tourmalines and other coloured gemstones, the situation is somewhat different.

A gemological report can confirm the type of gemstone, its weight, dimensions and certain gemological characteristics. For some gemstones, information about any treatments the stone may have undergone is also particularly important.

For certain stones, a laboratory may also provide an opinion on their geographical origin, if it can be determined with sufficient reliability. This can be especially important for rare and more valuable specimens.

Does Every Diamond Need a Certificate?

No.

Especially for very small diamonds, individual certification would generally not be practical. There can already be dozens of such stones in a single piece of jewellery.

For a larger or more valuable centre diamond, however, a diamond certificate becomes more important, as it provides the buyer with independently documented information about the stone.

The same applies to other gemstones. The absence of an individual certificate does not, by itself, mean that a stone is poor or of lower quality. What matters is its quality, origin, any treatments it may have undergone, and, above all, the trust placed in the person who selected it.
